Please send prose, poetry, hybrid work, translations, visual art & literary collaborations to DUENDE: the new, online literary journal of Goddard College’s BFA in Writing Program. DUENDE seeks authenticity & soulfulness, earthiness & expressiveness; as Lorca said, DUENDE “climbs up inside you, from the soles of the feet.” Submissions for our inaugural issue accepted through June 1, 2014. First issue debuts online in October. Writers from underrepresented groups especially welcome.

Letter to Potential Submitters:
Duende…insinuates authenticity and soulfulness, earthiness, expressiveness and a chill up the spine.  It encompasses darkness and intensity.  It emotes.  It elicits sorrow and joy.  It wrests a response from the body.It is a word and concept that experts attempt to translate in paragraphs and pages. In a full lecture on duende given in 1933,  Frederico Garcia Lorca says that it brings the artist face-to-face with death.  The artist must fight to uncover its gifts.  He calls it “a sort of corkscrew that can get art into the sensibility of an audience” and says it “climbs up inside you, from the soles of the feet.”

We ask you for your deepest and best work.  We who will read and accept your writing and art are fellow students of Goddard College’s undergraduate program (primarily the BFA in Creative Writing).  We chose Goddard due to its rich history of student-directed curriculum which allows eclectic, individualized focuses of study.  Thanks to our home at Goddard, Duende opens to include all forms of literature and art.  We welcome hybrids, collaborations, and other experiments in form, in addition to artful fiction, poetry, nonfiction, interviews, etc.

Push the envelope.  Push yourself and your work just a little more, make your offering just a bit larger, your understanding a layer deeper.

Then send it to us.  We can’t wait to see it.
