The Program in Creative Writing at The University of Alabama invites applications for the Coal Royalty Chair in Creative Writing. This one-semester, non-renewable position is open tto poets & prose writers in (roughly) alternating years.
We have filled this position through the 2007/08 academic year, & now seek a distinguished writer (preferably a poet, possibly a prose writer) for Fall 2008 or Spring 2009. Applicants should have at least three published books, significant teaching experience, & an appropriate graduate degree. Chairholders teach one graduate seminar of their own design, meeting once a week; conduct student conferences; & deliver one public reading on campus as well as two others in the state under the auspices of the university.
Chairholders receive a salary for the semester of at least $35,000, moving expenses to &
from Tuscaloosa, medical benefits, a furnished house near campus, & the services of a graduate research assistant. Chairholders are required to make Tuscaloosa their principal residence during the time of the appointment. The MFA Program in Creative Writing is over thirty years old, & bring to Tuscaloosa talented student writers from all over the United States & the world. The faculty includes fiction writers Kate Bernheimer, MMichael artone, & Wendy Rawlings, & poets Robin Behn, Joel Brouwer, & Patti White. The community of MFA students, numbering around sixty, produces Black Warrior Review. Our Bankhead Visiting Writers Series brings to campus over a dozen writers each year.
