Nelson Algren Awards
The Nelson Algren Awards are for short fiction. Submissions must be written by an American and must be unpublished. One $5,000 prize and three runner-up prizes of $1,500 are awarded. The award is given in memory of Chicago author Nelson Algren.
Stories must be typed and double-spaced, between 2,500 and 10,000 words. Manuscripts and e-mailed submissions will not be returned. Author’s
names should not appear on the manuscript. Authors are allowed to submit two entries. Authors should enclose a cover sheet with name, address, phone, and title of entry. Authors should secure the pages of their manuscripts with a staple or paper clip. There is no entry fee.
The competition will begin accepting entries November 1, 2006. Entries must be postmarked by February 15, 2007.

The Chicago Tribune cannot discuss this competition by phone. Employees and agents of the Chicago Tribune and Tribune Company, as well as their families and members of their households are not eligible. Should an entry be published by another publication while it is still under consideration in the Nelson Algren Awards competition, the author must notify the Chicago Tribune in writing.
Winners of the Nelson Algren Awards are notified in September. The four winning Nelson Algren Awards stories may, at the Chicago Tribune’s
sole discretion, be published in the Chicago Tribune (and it archival derivatives) and/or posted on the Chicago Tribune’s website. After the expiration of the initial thirty days from the date on which the Tribune first publishes the material, the Tribune and its affiliates will retain the rights to republish these
stories in their newspapers and on their websites, as well as their archival products, on a non-exclusive basis.
Acceptance of prize constitutes permission to use winner’s names, addresses and/or likeness, and the submitted essay in any form, for advertising purpose or editorial purposes with further compensation or payment for use of essay.
