HARK is a magazine of poetry and short fiction.

we are looking for writing that “makes strange”. We want experimentation. We want the liminal – the hint of something just beyond reach. We like to see ordinary things looked at in unusual ways. We’re looking for confidence and innovation with language. Magical realism, the fantastic, or the simply bizarre are just fine with us.

Above all, we want good writing.

Please no genre fiction. That being said, genre fiction is okay if it has
an experimental/liminal edge to it. In other words, if you’re breaking the genre.

If you have any mixed media to go with your work – a video, a piece of music, etc – please let us know.

Unfortunately we can’t pay you at this time. But we’ll be the best advocate for your writing. If your writing is accepted, we’ll link your personal webpage, Twitter, etc, to the post.

POETRY

please send us 3-5 poems, none longer than 50 lines. We like brevity and force
and feeling.

FLASH FICTION

please send us up to three pieces of flash/short short fiction. Again, brevity is key. No more than 750 words, but 500 is the sweet spot.

SHORT FICTION

please send us one short story. No more than 2,000 words.

 Submissions deadline: March 15, 2014

RESPONSE TIMES & ADDENDA

We will read your submission carefully and thoughtfully. We will try and get back
to you within a month, and we’ll try to say something about your submission(s) even if you aren’t accepted.

We don’t mind simultaneous submissions. Please just let us know if your piece is accepted elsewhere. And please only
send one submission at a time.

All works of original fiction and poetry are published with the permission of their authors, with whom all copyright remains. We ask that contributors acknowledge HARK Magazine as the place in which their work was first published if it is later reproduced. All work published may not be reproduced without permission.

Finally, please don’t send us something that has been previously published. We don’t mind if you’ve published it on
your personal blog, though.

READY TO SUBMIT?

Send the email to harkeditor [at] outlook [.com] with “SUB” in the title line, its category, and its title
(e.g., SUB poetry “the cat’s pyjamas” / “three poems”, etc). Please send the submission as an attachment rather than in the body of the email
(.docx, .doc and .oft are fine, but no PDFs, please)
Don’t worry too much about formatting.

Please include your name (real or not), and just a line about you if you’d like to. We don’t mind either way, but it will be
nice to know our contributors a little better.

Please don’t list where you’ve been published before.
