About The How To Eat Fried Furries / Mo*Con VI Short Story Contest

Eraserhead Press recently published the dark satire How To Eat Fried Furries as part of the New Bizarro Author Series. To celebrate (and, honestly, help get word out about this book) author Nicole Cushing is sponsoring a short fiction contest for stories in the science fiction, fantasy, horror, and bizarro genres. The prize for the winner? Pro rate payment (that’s 5 cents per word) for stories of 2,000 words or less. The maximum prize money? $100. The winner will also receive publication of his or her story on the official website for the Mo*Con speculative fiction convention, http://www.mocon.indianahorror.org, and will be interviewed by Nicole Cushing. The interview will then be posted at www.nicolecushing.com.
Alas, there is no second or third place. As in Highlander, “there can be only one”.

Deadline for entries is Friday, April 15, 2011. Winner to be announced Saturday, May 21st, 2011 at Mo*Con.

Guidelines:
Your story should be no longer than 2,000 words. Stories longer than 2,000 words will be deleted/discarded and will not be considered for the contest. Original fiction only. Sorry folks, no reprints. Also, no simultaneous submissions.
You must be 18 or older to participate.
Stories from any branch of speculative fiction will be considered. Just to be clear, that means science fiction, fantasy, horror, bizarro, and all shades in-between (slipstream, new weird, steampunk, etc.) are fair game. Nicole’s taste in fiction does drift toward the weird and the dark, so keep that in mind. But more conventional tales, well told, may also meet with her approval.
Stories involving revenge fantasies, rape, incest, serial killers, or vampires are discouraged, but not banned from the contest. If you must submit a story from any of these well-worn tropes, make sure the story takes on the subject matter from an original angle.
No fan fiction, please.   Send only your best work. This is not a competition for drawer-stories.
Send your short story as either a Microsoft Word (.doc) or Open Office (.odt) document. Other formats will be deleted/discarded. Details of where and how to submit your story are posted below.
This is probably self-evident, but just to spell out the terms: By entering the contest, you agree that if you win, you grant Mo*Con VI the one-time right to publish your story online at the Mo*Con VI website. All other rights are retained by you. By entering the contest, you also are stating that the story has not been previously published in any other form (print or electronic).
How To Submit Your Story
This story contest is a little different different than most. To enter you have to first purchase How To Eat Fried Furries from Amazon.com. Here’s how it works.
Purchase Nicole Cushing’s new book, How To Eat Fried Furries at Amazon.com.
Amazon.com will send you a receipt via email (often with the subject line “Your Order With Amazon.com). This receipt has your name and address. Don’t worry, the Amazon receipt does not disclose any confidential financial information, such as your credit card number, etc.
Forward this Amazon email receipt to furryfarmers@gmail.com . Attach your short story to this email. Cover letters (in the body of the email, or as a separate attachment) are allowed, but not necessary.
You can earn the right to submit more than one story to the contest by purchasing additional copies of How To Eat Fried Furries from Amazon.com. For example, if you send in a receipt documenting the purchase of five copies of the book, you can submit five stories for the contest. Given that this contest starts out during the holiday gift-giving season, this might be something you want to look at. Of course, you could also make a purchase of one copy (which would only make you eligible to send in one copy) and later make a purchase of a second copy (which would make you eligible for a second, later submission). Or you can just submit a receipt documenting one sale and submit one story.
Several contests charge a nominal fee to enter.  This is contest is unique, because instead of just paying money to enter, you actually get something in return.
