Submission Guidelines
Review the following guidelines carefully before submitting your work via our online submission manager. Please note: it is your responsibility to withdraw submissions on the submission manager containing poems or manuscripts accepted elsewhere. Do not send us an email notifying us. Instead, please withdraw your submission online, and resubmit.
Before submitting your own work, we highly encourage you to familiarize yourself with our previous publications. Sample poems from earlier issues of the journal and information about books can be found on the Journal and the Press pages respectively. You can subscribe to the journal here.
General Guidelines
Send your submission during the reading period by using our Online Submission Manager. Follow the directions on how to fill out the provided data fields. Once you have registered with the online submissions system, you will also be able to view the status of your submission, withdraw a submission, or query about a submission using the system. We are no longer accepting hard copy submissions. If you submit hard copies via snail mail, we will not be able to respond to, or return, the poems.
Upload only one file containing your work. Please include a brief cover letter, including a short list of any previous publications, in the “Comments” box. Submissions must be uploaded as a .doc(x), .rtf, or .pdf file. Any files that do not adhere to these guidelines will not be considered for publication.
Your saved file name should read: Last name_First name_Genre(.file extension). For example: Spicer_Jack_Poetry.docx or Rhys_Jean_Bookcontest.pdf.
Expect anywhere from one week to four months for a decision. Please do not query until at least two months have passed since the closing date of the reading period.
If your work is accepted for publication, you will be notified by the editors via email and will receive instructions about the pre–publication process. Barrow Street pays two contributor copies. See below for details about payment for the annual Book Contest award.
