Tea Party Magazine’s 2008 Poetry Prize Guidelines

Tyehimba Jess’ first book of poetry, leadbelly, was a winner of the 2004 National Poetry Series. The Library Journal and Black Issues Book Review both named it one of the “Best Poetry Books of 2005.” Jess received a 2004 Literature Fellowship from the National Endowment for the Arts, and was a 2004-5 Winter Fellow at the Provincetown Fine Arts Work Center. He won a
2000–2001 Illinois Artts Council Fellowship in Poetry, the 2001 Chicago Sun-Times Poetry Award, and a 2006 Whiting Fellowship. Jess is an Assistant Professor of English at University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign and a Cave Canem fellow.

Submission Guidelines:

Please send up to 3 poems per entry by mail (no email submissions). All entries are considered for publication and considered anonymously. In your cover letter please include your name, address, phone number, email, titles, and where you heard about our poetry contest. Your name should appear ONLY in the cover letter (not on the poems). Manuscripts will not be returned. Make checks or money orders payable to Tea Party Magazine.

Previously published works and works forthcoming elsewhere cannot be considered. Simultaneous submissions are okay, but fee is non-refundable if accepted elsewhere. Multiple entries are okay, as long as a separate reading fee is included with each entry. Tea Party Magazine cannot consider work from anyone currently or recently affiliated with Tea Party. In addition, Tea Party
cannot consider work from anyone who is a current/former student or personal friend of the prize judge. Contest results will also be announced on our website www.teapartymagazine.org.
